I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas.

After receiving an undergraduate degree in economics from Texas A&M University in 1987, I went on to study for the pastoral ministry at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri. While studying for the ministry I was also an exchange student for one year at a Lutheran Theological Seminary in Oberursel, close to Frankfurt. From 1990 - 1991 I vicared at First Lutheran Church in Gainesville, Florida, and worked with the students at the University of Florida.
When asked, "How did you come to live in Germany?" I usually answer, "Her name is Esther." When I was an exchange student in Germany, I met and fell in love with Esther, who is now my wife. After the exchange year was over I returned to the United States to finish my studies. She, however, went to Freiburg in the South of Germany to study art. There she joined Freiburg's Lutheran congregation that just happened to be looking for a second pastor. That's how that congregation became interested in me and called me in 1992 to be one of its pastors. The German church in Kaiserslautern called me in 1995 to be its pastor, and I've been here ever since.
