When asked, "How did you come to live in Germany?"
I usually answer, "Her name is Esther." When I was an exchange student in
Germany, I met and fell in love with Esther, who is now my wife. After the
exchange year was over I returned to the United States to finish my studies.
She, however, went to Freiburg in the South of Germany to study art. There
she joined Freiburg's Lutheran congregation that just happened to be looking
for a second pastor. That's how that congregation became interested in me
and called me in 1992 to be one of its pastors. The German church in
Kaiserslautern called me in 1995 to be its pastor, and I've been here ever
since.
I am also pastor of a
German congregation, the
Selbständige Evangelisch-
Lutherische Kirche ('SELK')
or Independent Evangelical
Lutheran Church,
of Kaiserslautern.
